Brutal Honesty

Wild West

Something is seriously wrong in this country. No, I am not talking about the war. Or the fact that the President would have us all believe that global warming is some sort of left-wing myth. I am talking about the fact that the Vice-President of the country can shoot a guy in the face and it isn't considered a big deal.

Seeing as how I am not a big hunter, nor do I really endorse the idea of killing animals(but I guess to each his own)I don't really understand how you accidently shoot someone in the face with a shotgun. Can't the VP pick out a safer method of relaxation? What do you think that the rest of the world thinks about this?

The funniest thing about this is to think of the possible jokes that could be made using the VP's name and something like shooting a load of pellets. But because I am only the 3rd funniest of my brothers according to my wife(there are only 4 of us) I won't try to make jokes. Fill free to make a joke on the comments. By the way could this picture be more accurate for someone who would ACCIDENTLY shot his hunting companion?

I'm wondering if the man dies from his "heart attack" if Cheney will be tried for involuntary manslaughter or something. It was so weird that the white house/Cheney's office didn't say anything until the story was leaked by a local TX news station.

Not only did he shoot the guy, but he didn't feel the need to tell anybody about it. Can you imagine? One of the most prominent people on the planet can shoot somebody and doesn't feel like informing the public about what happened is important?

This is just a microcosom of the way he operates in general. No accountability.

If he does die I hope that Ted Kennedy leads the charge on trying to get Cheney to resign.

Nothing would be more classic then having Teddy captain that ship. American politics at their finest.

I have to say that I sort of disagree with you guys.

I agree that the world probably thinks the whole situation is odd, but the world probably thinks we are weird generally for having cowboys for comanders.

back to the point - what is wierd to me is how much we care about this. There is a war, a sizeable economic problem, an energy crisis, a nation of people threatening WWIII over a cartoon, a terrorist group winning elections in palestine, and we are all watching the news about a hunting accident.

I don't even have a clue about what is going on in world affairs, but I can guarantee something more important that cheney's shooting spree is out there.

riggity,

I would agree with you if he had immediately come clean. That did not happen. This episode gives insight into how he (and by extension the White House) operates.

I have to agree that there are all sorts of pressing matters and that generally a hunting accident isn't that big of a deal. Basically I just that it was funny that the VP shot some guy in the face. However, with the whole coverup nature now surrounding the accident I think that it looks really bad. As for the cartoon, could these people(as in the people freaking out and not muslims per se) be any more prone to offense?

Here is a CNN article on why this is newsworthy:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/14/mccaughan.cheney/

Note that when questioned about how the shooting story was released to the public in his interview yesterday Cheney expressed no regrets about the total lack of official involvement. He said that if given the chance to do it over again he would do the same thing.

I don't believe that for a minute. He would have had the White House make an announcement if he knew then what he knows now. In fact, the White House would have gone ahead and announced it without his giving the go-ahead if they had the chance to do it over.

This is an example of an inability to look critically at past decisions and learn from them. Or at least an inability to do so in public. It is pathetic that Vice President isn't mature enough to admit a mistake. This after just having made an obvious and serious error in shooting someone in the face.

He should be the most apologetic person on earth right now. The fact that he isn't is disturbing.

I still adhere to my original position. Even if there is a cover-up, I don't really care. Not being forthright about a matter of national importance is a big deal (and that has happened any number of times with these guys over the last few years), but not telling us about a matter that is essentially personal is not anything.

This story is funny and sensational, and I guess there is a point to be made about it being symbolic too (symbolic of the way these guys do public affairs generally that is). Important it is not; blogworthy it is.
