D-Con

So last night we were distracted as was most of America by the Super Bowl. Normally, that would be great. However, when you have a little dog that is very curious, and loves to sniff around, and eat anything that might be considered edible, distraction can be a bad thing. After searching Tia's parent's home, I found Romey in the storage room. Unfortunately for Romey there is mouse poison in the storage room. After informing Tia's mom(Martha) that Romey had been in the storage room Martha went and checked/counted the poisons that were out and let us know that Romey had in fact ingested copious amounts of poison.

Tia quickly called the vet, who told us that we needed to induce vomiting. Not having any available ipecac, we were told to give her hydrogen peroxide. This meant wrestling little Romey to the ground, prying open her mouth, and forcing hydrogen peroxide down her throat. Romey, despite her small stature has enormous strength, and sharp, claw like nails. After finally getting the fluid into her, we had to watch in horror as she foamed at the mouth(like a rabid dog), and stumbled around until she started heaving. Luckily, she threw up several times (fluorescent blue barf) and we were pretty sure that the poison was out of her. We then contacted a Veterinarian who agreed to meet us at his office. He gave Romey a vitamin k shot.

Apparently, D-Con prevents the body from coagulating blood. Thus, the animal that ingests it basically bleeds to death. This process can take 4-6 weeks. Because of the long, drawn out nature of the poison Romey will be on medication for the 4-6 week period. We feel really lucky that we found out she ate the poison. We feel lucky that we were able to get the peroxide into her. We feel lucky that she is alive and well. We need to give special thanks to Martha for being so attentive and helpful, in getting the peroxide into Romey, and helping with the Veterinarian. To a lot of people this whole episode might sound silly, but for dog lovers like us it was a very traumatic experience. We learned a hard lesson, do not let Romey wander, because she will get in trouble.

This is NOT a pity comment :) Aren't we glad that Rome-dog survived? She's a trooper.

You can thank me for helping save Romedizzles life. After all the crap I gave Rome to eat in Wyoming last summer it had to toughen the stomach up a bit. In short, you're welcome.

Peter, give me a call when you get a minute.
